Even at her sickest, Juana Hernandez believed in helping her family and community. With her donor's kidney, she has much more energy to continue serving those around her.
Finding a Living Donor Workshop
This program focuses on living kidney donation by giving waitlisted kidney patients the tools to self-advocate to find themselves a living donor. Through peer networking, education on living donation, training on sharing one's story and need, and the chance to speak with those who have experienced living donation, participants and their support people are equipped to pursue living donation in the way that is most suitable for them. Participants in this workshop must be currently active on the waitlist at Legacy Good Samaritan, OHSU, or the Portland VA hospital.
Workshops are scheduled periodically throughout the year and typically take place over two days on Zoom. Waitlisted kidney patients meet virtually as a group to learn about living donation and explore creative ways to extend their networks and seek a living donor.
Session 1 typically covers:
- Background information on living donation
- Building your support system
- A Q&A panel of living kidney donors and recipients
Session 2 typically covers:
- How to build your story
- Outreach ideas
- A Q&A panel of transplant center staff
