Edson Reyes

This news came as a total shock to his family because none of them had ever experienced kidney problems. The doctors told Edson that his kidneys had not developed properly and were the size of those of a two-year-old child.

Edson’s mother, Roxana, says: “After settling into our new life, recently arriving from Guatemala, my son Edson, who had always been a healthy and happy child, got sick and we didn’t know why this was happening to him, and the doctors didn’t know why he was so ill either.”

A month later, Edson began receiving hemodialysis at a pediatric dialysis center in Portland. Edson says: “For me, dialysis is uncomfortable. Sitting in the chair for so long makes me restless. It’s like my mind can’t process what’s happening to me. Because of dialysis, I haven’t been able to go swimming, and because of being sick, I can’t play soccer, which is what I love to do the most.”

But he doesn’t lose his positive spirit—he still feels grateful to have the blessing of being in a place where he can receive this treatment. Edson has been able to remain stable and, thanks to that, he has been active on the waiting list for a year. Edson knows that there are young people like him in the same situation and that there are hard times. He would like to tell other youth going through the same thing: “We have to follow the instructions about food and medicine. I know there are moments when it’s hard to take the pills anymore, but think of it for your own well-being. Stay strong! God makes us strong.”

Edson dreams of finishing high school and pursuing a career in automotive mechanics. His mom, Roxana, says: “We are focused on his health and the challenges that come with the treatment.” They know they will receive “the call” when they least expect it.

Roxana and Edson want to encourage the community to donate their organs, since it gives hope for life to young people like Edson. Edson says, “I admire and applaud those people who take the initiative to do it from the heart. Many blessings and thank you so much.”

En octubre del 2023 después de una visita a emergencias y de someterse a varias pruebas, los médicos de Doernbecher descubrieron que Edson de 19 años, sufría de insuficiencia renal. Esta noticia fue un shock total para su familia porque nadie de ellos había tenido problemas renales. Los doctores le dijeron a Edson que sus riñones no se habían desarrollado adecuadamente y que eran del tamaño de los de un niño de dos años. 

 La mama de Edson, Roxana dice “Después de instalarnos en nuestra nueva vida, recién llegados de Guatemala mi hijo Edson, que siempre había sido un niño sano y feliz, se enfermó y no sabíamos porque esto estaba pasándole a él, y los doctores tampoco sabían porque él estaba así de enfermo”.

Un mes después, Edson comenzó a recibir hemodiálisis en un centro de diálisis pediátrico en Portland. Edson dice “Para mí es incómodo estar en diálisis, estar en la silla tanto tiempo me da desesperación. Es como que mi mente no procesara lo que me sucede. Por estar en diálisis no he podido ir a nadar y por estar enfermo no puedo jugar soccer que es lo que más me gusta hacer”. 

Pero él no pierde su lado positivo ya que aun así el se siente feliz de tener la bendición de estar en un lugar en donde puede recibir este tratamiento. Edson se ha podido mantener estable y gracias a eso, lleva un año activo en la lista de espera. Edson sabe que hay jóvenes como el en la misma situación y sabe que hay momentos difíciles. A él le gustaría decirles a los jóvenes que como él están pasando por lo mismo, “Tenemos que seguir las instrucciones sobre la alimentación y medicina, yo se que hay momentos que ya no te pasan las pastillas, pero véanlo por tu bienestar. ¡Animo! Dios nos hace fuertes”

Edson sueña con terminar la preparatoria y seguir una carrera en mecánica automotriz. Roxana, su mama dice “Estamos enfocados en su salud y los desafíos que conlleva el tratamiento”. Ellos saben que recibirán la “llamada” cuando menos lo esperen.

Roxana y Edson quieren alentar a la comunidad a que donen sus órganos, ya que da esperanza de vida a jóvenes como Edson. Edson dice “Admiro y aplaudo a esas personas que toman la iniciativa de hacerlo de corazón. Muchas bendiciones y muchísimas gracias”.
